It’s been a classic weather pattern for fishing around Wellington lately. For those anglers venturing out most have been well rewarded with minimal wind and good fishing.

Boat - great snapper fishing all the way up and down the west coast. 40-60mtrs has been a productive depth to fish but the deeper and shallower spots have still been fishing well, but not quite as consistent.

Kingfish as well have been big and mean on most well known haunts like hunters, boom and kapiti.

On the south coast its been a mixed bag of teris,

cod, gurnard, trevs, snapper and kingis but not as many snaps and kings as out west.

Puka fishing has been good all round but will be off on their spawning run shortly.

Havnt heard much about bluenose and bass apart from the odd big moocher at the Trench.

Shore - good numbers of kahawai around and some really chunky ones around the harbour and south coast.

A few nice bluemoki have been caught as well as some trevs, gurnard and snapper in Palliser bay.

There’s alot of sharks around at present so I would recommend using shellfish/paua/cray berley instead of fish based berley to minimize sharky issues.

Also cray and shellfish baits are better for not catching sharks (not incl spotty sharks - rig).

Slow jigs and shellfish ‘fishbites’ have also been working well throughout the winter months.
